2013 dodge avenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Midsize sedan is powerful, comfortable. introductionthe dodge avenger is an honest, straightforward sedan at a good price. In certain respects it's less sophisticated than some competitors, but it's powerful, comfortable and reasonably economical to operate. It's also quiet and pleasant to drive. avenger was launched as a 2008 model. A thorough update for the 2011 model year made the avenger much more competitive in key areas. Avenger r/t joined the lineup for 2012. Avenger carries over to 2013 unchanged. dodge calls the avenger america's most affordable mid-size sedan, and based on current retail prices, we can't disagree. Yet the avenger isn't just selling price. We might call it a mid-size package with compact value. the 2008 avenger appeared looking like a scaled-down version of the hot-selling, full-size dodge charger. Since then, the charger has moved on to a new look, while the avenger has remained mostly unchanged. It's still clean, tightly creased and not bad looking, but without the more dramatic proportions of the bigger car it doesn't stand out. Its basic visual impact is retrograde. the cabin contributes to a relaxing, pleasant driving experience. The quality of the interior materials isn't the best in the class, but the avenger is comfortable and the controls are intuitive and easy to use. avenger se retails for hundreds of dollars less than the next competitive mid-size sedan, and it comes well equipped. With the 4-speed automatic transmission, the avenger se is epa-rated at 21/30 mpg city/highway. The price is thousands less than other mid-size v6s, yet it's the most powerful v6 in its class. Epa ratings are 19/29 mpg. avenger r/t comes with the v6, a sports suspension and racy stripes and interior treatment. Loaded with navigation and the boston acoustics audio upgrade, an avenger r/t barely cracks $27,000. the avenger chassis is shared with the chrysler 200, which was designed to be a convertible as well as a sedan, so the chassis is stiff and strong. Dodge aced the suspension, and both ride quality and cornering response are excellent, benefits of that rigid chassis. V6 is optional 1,795). A new blacktop package 595) combines a body-color grille with a black headlamp bezels, a trunk spoiler, and 18-inch black-painted aluminum wheels. avenger r/t 25,495) is the sport model, with the v6, firmer suspension, leather-bolstered sport seats and unique graphics inside and out. It also comes with foglights, the cold weather package, the media center, boston acoustics audio, and other goodies. However, it does not stand out and gets lost among all the mid-size sedans. avenger's shape suggests the 2006-10 charger, especially at the hips and roofline, but doesn't inspire like the charger does. Its clean look is emphasized by the lack of cladding or ding strips on the sides and body-colored door handles and mirrors (except on the base se). The bumpers, front and rear, are smooth. The black egg-crate grille adds visual interest. the crosshair grille is a dodge trademark, and the avenger uses black crosshairs lightly outlined in chrome. It's easy to spot for its distinctive 10-spoke alloy wheels, black headlight background and go-fast slash stripes on the front fenders. The body-colored outline of the black crosshair on the r/t grille helps. the new blacktop package applies the look of the r/t to the sxt, minus the tape stripes and substituting unique black-painted alloy wheels. Most cars in the mid-size class are trying to look like sleek luxury sedans, with varying degrees of success. It's not particularly exciting, but neither is it annoying, frustrating, or inconvenient, as are many cars with interiors and controls that try to do too much or be cool. The avenger is simple: everything in its correct place, and not too much of it. That alone makes driving more relaxing. the dashboard is big and slabby, perhaps described as monolithic. The doors are well designed, with comfortable armrests, a good grab handle, door pockets, and small levers that make opening easy. The best part of the interior might be the expensive feel of the perforated leather on the steering wheel, standard on all but the base se. The worst part might be some cheap looking chrome and faux aluminum trim. An interior overhaul for 2011 improved fit and finish substantially, but the avenger's interior materials are still not best in class. in the front seats, avenger feels a little more enclosed than the roomiest cars in its class, partly for the massive impact of the dash, but it doesn't feel confining. The fabric on the base seats is good and rugged, though a bit boring in light colors and better in black. The front seats are comfortable for cruising and long hauls, but not as supportive as they might be in corners. Those in the sporty r/t have leather bolsters, red stitching and unique, z-striped fabric inserts. The bolstering improves a bit, but the sport seats are still a bit too much like heavy, cushy barcaloungers for truly aggressive driving. the instrument package is a nicely lit cluster of three gauges, with the largest in the center and one on either inside. All models have a tach, and a fuel/temperature package on the left, with a digital display on the bottom that allows the driver to scroll various options. On other models, the speedo stays in the center, and the problem reading the right gauge (the tach) becomes a little less crucial. the avenger has thumb-wheel controls for cruise and audio on the steering-wheel spokes. The lights, wipers etc. On the column stalks are easy to find and operate, but the stalks themselves feel a bit more shaky or wobbly than those in some competitors. There are three big, solid, perfectly placed knobs for climate control at the bottom of the center stack. It makes for one of the easiest. America's favorite minivan. introductionthe dodge grand caravan is indisputably america's favorite minivan. Dodge sold 141,648 grand caravans in 2012, representing a 28 percent increase over 2011. Add in 111,744 sales for the 2012 chrysler town & country, the grand caravan's mechanically similar but decidedly up-market cousin, and the resulting quarter-million minivans account for nearly half the entire u. According to dodge, that makes the 2013 grand caravan the most affordable seven-passenger vehicle currently on sale in the u. S. yet despite its low price, the grand caravan keeps acquiring attractive new features. For example, integrated trailer sway damping is now standard on all 2013 grand caravan models. A second-row bench seat is now standard on 2013 grand caravan base models, increasing versatility. And a new, industry-exclusive dual-screen blu-ray video system is now offered on 2013 grand caravan crew and 2013 grand caravan r/t models. dodge grand caravan is a top safety pick by the insurance industry for highway safety, the insurance industry's lobbying outfit. the basic design of the current-generation grand caravan has been around since 2008, but it still looks fresh and crisp, especially next to some of the more forced and gimmicky styling we've seen on newer import-brand vans. Substantial interior and mechanical revisions back in the 2011 model year updated the grand caravan and have kept it more than competitive in its segment. grand caravan rides lower and more firmly than minivans did a few years ago, making it more responsive to driver inputs. Long gone are the annoying wallow and float once characteristic of the breed. Yet ride quality is quite smooth. Like all modern minivans, the grand caravan is big, so it can be a beast to handle in tight quarters. The grand caravan, toyota sienna, nissan quest and honda odyssey are all roughly the same size: extra large. We should call these vehicles midi-vans or, simply, vans because there is nothing mini about them. power is provided by the relatively new 3. 6-liter v6 that is rapidly becoming ubiquitous in chrysler group products. Unfortunately, it's still mated to a mediocre 6-speed automatic transmission, resulting in a combination that delivers barely adequate response for most drivers. we found the interior of the grand caravan attractive, though, as in most of its rivals, hard plastic dominates the dashboard. Still, the soft-touch door tops, boldly contemporary gauges and some nice bits of trim are welcome. grand caravan is about usable space. Super stow 'n go is standard on all but the base model, and optional there. The third-row seats fold into the well behind them, and with all the seats down the grand caravan can accept a 4x8 sheet of plywood. grand caravan's entertainment features make it a strong contender in the minivan class. Families will like it, especially because those entertainment features will make for more enjoyable family trips. That is, after all, the reason the grand caravan remains so popular. They include a variety of hard-drive radios, siriusxm satellite radio, rear dvd or blu-ray entertainment, a wireless cell phone link, and a mobile internet hot spot. lineupthe 2013 dodge grand caravan is offered in five models: avp, se, sxt, crew, and r/t. All come with a 283-hp 3. 6-liter v6 and a 6-speed automatic transmission. avp stands for american value package. It's distinguished by body-color grille trim and satin carbon alloy wheels. It loses the roof rack. option packages include a driver's convenience group 795) with heated front and second-row seats, heated steering wheel, usb port, uconnect with voice command, bluetooth streaming audio and cell phone link, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and second and third-row window shades; uconnect hands free group 690) with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, sirius satellite radio, uconnect phone, voice recognition, and auto-dimming rearview mirror; entertainment group 1 with a single-screen rear dvd entertainment system, sirius satellite radio, 40gb hdd, rearview camera, and 115v outlet; security group 395) with remote engine starting and an alarm; and a trailer tow group 995) with heavy-duty engine cooling, load-leveling rear suspension, and a trailer wiring harness. Stand-alone options include a removable second-row console instead of a more elaborate unit (no charge); the infinity sound system 795); and the load-leveling suspension 290). Options include a rearview camera, rear park assist, rear cross path and blind spot alert. All-wheel drive is not available. walkaroundthe 2013 dodge grand caravan is attractive, as minivans go. The look is crisp and tidy, but not boxy, with just a touch of sportiness. Unlike some of its competitors, the grand caravan neither blends in with the scenery, nor leaps out of it, screaming. up front is a curvy, almost car-like fascia with mesh inserts above and below the main bumper. Filling the upper grille are the trademark dodge crosshairs, finished in matte black with a chrome outline; except on the r/t, where the chrome parts are replaced with body color. rear-end styling is more clever than conspicuous; on each side the rear roof pillar unites with the taillight cluster to form a single surface, which then bulges out just slightly to become the rear bumper and step plate before retreating back up to the roof via the taillight on the opposite side of the van. Recessed into this gentle u-shape is a subtly convex liftgate integrating a body-color roof spoiler. sixteen-inch wheels are standard, although dodge has promised 17-inch steel wheels by mid-year. We think the available five-spoke 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels look better. still, a minivan shape does not lend itself to artistic sculpture. A description of the overall shape of this current generation of the dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1984 model. There is a big box behind, where all the people and cargo fit, and a smaller box in front, for the engine. That very efficient outline defines every minivan on the road. all the leading minivans, including toyota sienna, honda odyssey, nissan quest and chrysler town & country, measure within an inch or two of the grand caravan in overall dimensions. They're all big, and with a 202. 8-inch overall length and a 121. 2-inch wheelbase, the chrysler vans are the biggest of the bunch. these so-called minivans are quite large. However, they share their basic architecture with cars, using unit-body structures and front-wheel drive platforms, with the engine mounted transversely. Conversely, full-size vans, such as the chevrolet express, are built on truck platforms, with body-on-frame structures, rear-wheel-drive platforms and giant, longitudinally mounted v8 engines. Minivans are lighter, more fuel-efficient and offer more responsive handling than the full-size vans. interiorgrand caravan boasts a rich and inviting interior, characterized by strong, decisive lines and shapes and.
